How to build a floating shelves

Steps

  1. Cut boards to length; sand and finish before fitting.
  2. Find studs or check masonry; mark bracket positions level.
  3. Fix the brackets; drill matching holes into the back edge of the shelf.
  4. Slide shelves on and tighten any grub screws.
Tip: On plasterboard, only fix floating shelves into studs or with heavy-duty cavity anchors; standard plugs will pull out.

  • 1 × 200×44 mm oak or pine board, 1.8 m
  • 2 × concealed floating shelf brackets (rated 25 kg+)
  • Wall fixings to suit wall type

Tools

  • Mitre saw
  • Drill with long 12 mm bit
  • Detector for pipes and cables
  • Level
