How to build a freestanding pergola

Steps

  1. Set out a 3 m square and check diagonals are equal.
  2. Concrete posts 600 mm deep or bolt to spikes; brace plumb.
  3. Notch and bolt the beams across the post tops.
  4. Fix rafters at 500 mm centres with hangers or notches.
Tip: Most UK councils do not require planning permission for a pergola under 2.5 m high away from the boundary, but check permitted development rules if you are near a boundary or in a conservation area.

  • 2 × 150×47 mm beams, 3.6 m
  • 7 × 150×47 mm rafters, 3.6 m
  • 4 × post spikes or concrete-in
  • Coach screws and joist hangers

  • Drill/driver and impact driver
  • Spirit level and string line
  • Two ladders and a helper
