How to build a bird box (blue tit)

Steps

  1. Cut back 450 mm, front 200 mm, sides 250/200 mm sloping, base 120 mm, lid 200 mm.
  2. Drill a 25 mm hole 125 mm above the base.
  3. Nail sides to back, add base (with a drain hole) and front.
  4. Fit the lid with a strip hinge so you can clean it out.
Tip: Hole size decides the tenant: 25 mm blue tit, 28 mm great tit, 32 mm house sparrow. Face it north to east, out of direct sun.

Materials

  • 1 × 150×15 mm untreated softwood board, 1.2 m
  • 12 × 30 mm galvanised nails or screws
  • Rubber or leather strip for the lid hinge

  • Hand saw
  • Drill with 25 mm spade bit
  • Hammer
